Therapeutic Mentoring Programs (TM)
In-Home Family Therapy (IHT)
In-home therapy and Therapeutic Mentoring are two of six services created by the Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative (CBHI), which was created to help keep children and adolescents with serious emotional and behavioral health needs in their homes and communities. These services are available to children who are receiving many types of MassHealth from birth until their 21st birthday. The services are especially designed to support children, adolescents, and their families in the places where they feel most comfortable homes, schools, and neighborhoods.
How In-Home Therapy Works?
Sometimes youth and their families are looking for more help than just a once-a-week visit to a clinic. In-home therapy offers more intensive and flexible support during more hours-8 AM to 8 PM, 7 days a week. You can also get support by phone 24/7. Even though our program is called In-Home Therapy, services can occur in other places besides your home, such as your child’s school, a community center, or a library. If your child is already seeing a therapist in a clinic, they can keep seeing that therapist and have In-Home Therapy at the same time, so your family can have as much support as they need. An important component is family therapy, which typically happens at least once a week.
Our In-Home Therapy staff can assist with:
- Problem-solving
- Limit-setting
- Risk management/safety planning
- Communication
- Skill building to strengthen the family
- Advancing therapeutic goals
- Improving ineffective patterns of interaction
- Identifying and utilizing community resources
- Developing and maintaining tools for the youth and parent/caregiver(s) to sustain treatment gains.
Working Together:
All therapy works best when everyone is working together, but with In-Home therapy, this is even more important. What makes In-Home therapy different from therapy in a clinic is that it is family-driven and team-based. Our staff won’t just give you updates on your child’s needs to learn from you about your child so that they can provide the best help. If you can’t make an appointment that you have scheduled with our staff, please call them 24 hours in advance so that they can offer you another meeting time in the same week.
How We Train Our Staff:
In-home therapy staff are trained in types of treatment that are especially helpful to families: Wraparound and Systems of Care. Using these types of treatment, we will work with many of the other important people in your child and family’s life, such as schools, doctors, DCF workers, and extended family members. We will help you create a plan to help your child or adolescent feel better emotionally and learn to cope with difficulties at home and school. All families receiving In-Home Therapy will have a master-level clinician experienced in providing therapy to children and families. The master-level clinician may be assisted by a bachelor-level clinician, called at Therapeutic Training and support staff to help put the treatment plan into action.
When a Referral is Made:
You may call our referral line at 508-580-0364 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. A Clinician will return your call within one business day to assess your child’s eligibility for the services and then link you directly with a program coordinator. If there is no wait, a decision will be made between the caregiver and program staff to schedule an appointment within 24 hours if needed or within the next week. If there is a wait, our staff will help caregivers find other agencies in the area that also provide In-Home Therapy (IHT) that either have no wait or a shorter wait. A list of agencies that provide IHT and a weekly updated count of how many openings each has can be accessed by visiting MABHA.com and logging in as a guest. Therapeutic Mentoring
Therapeutic Mentoring services are available to children who are receiving many types of MassHealth from birth until their 21st birthday. The services are especially designed to support children, adolescents, and their families in the places where they feel most comfortable homes, schools, and neighborhoods.
New Clients: 508-580-0364
After a consultation, we will pair you with a case manager who will schedule regular appointments.
How It Works:
A Therapeutic Mentor teaches skills to children and adolescents to help them improve their functioning in the community based on the treatment plan of a “Hub provider” (an outpatient therapist, an In-Home Therapy team, or an Intensive Care Coordinator). If a Hub provider suggests Therapeutic Mentoring, they think your child may struggle with social skills, problem-solving skills, or conflict-resolution skills. The Hub provider also thinks that they could benefit from a trained adult to help them apply their skills at the moment in their community. A Therapeutic Mentor will go with your child to the places where they have the most trouble and teach them new skills, such as better ways to talk or act with other children and adults.
Because Therapeutic Mentors often go out into the community with a child or adolescent (rather than meet in an office like many therapists), there is sometimes confusion about what a Therapeutic Mentor does. Therapeutic Mentors are NOT Big Brothers or Big Sisters, and when they bring your child into the community, it is to focus on learning skills rather than just having fun. Mentors help your child take the skills that they learn in therapy and use them when they are out in social situations, such as playgrounds, parks, after-school programs, or shopping malls.
Our Therapeutic Mentors can help you:
- Directed time with youth in activities in the home and community that are designed to meet the goals of the Individual Action Plan
- Coach, support and train the youth to be successful in navigating various social contexts, learning new skills, and making functional progress
- Teach alternative strategies and provide anticipatory guidance
- Role plays and behavioral rehearsal
- Skill acquisition and practice in the community
- Provide exposure to social situations in which age-appropriate skills can be practiced
- Enhance conflict resolution skills
- Develop communication skills
How We Train Our Staff:
Therapeutic Mentors are trained in the family-centered principles of Wraparound and Systems of Care. This means that we will work with many of the other important people in your child and family’s life, such as schools, doctors, DCF workers, and extended family members. We will help you create a plan to help your child or adolescent feel better emotionally and learn to cope with difficulties at home and school. The Therapeutic Mentor will be checking in with you and your child’s Hub provider at least once a week. They also can attend care planning meetings, school meetings, or other meetings to help support your child.
